Forster's Tern, Kirkby-le-Soken, 21/02/99

The Forster's Tern was on view when we arrived on site after a long hike along the seawall from the car park by the council skip depot. At about half a mile distance, the bird was identifiable as a small very white tern. Soon, however, the bird took flight and after a few minutes drifted closer and closer before spending the next twenty minutes fishing in a creek at very close-range, where all the features of this first-winter Yank could be studied. At a distance the bird appeared very white, like a diminutive Sandwich Tern. Close-up, the distinctive black eye-patch and wind pattern clinched the identification. Little else of note here except c50 Brent Geeseon the saltmarsh and a few Shelduck and Wigeon.
