Laughing Gull, Cley, 30/04/99

After an hour's wait, during which Vicky and me decided it was all an elaborate prank, the adult summer Laughing Gull appeared in the small flock of Black-headed Gulls circling over the gardens in Church Lane, Cley. Circling low in front of us for two or three minutes in the bright afternoon sunlight, we were treated to excellent views. The gull was larger than the accompanying Black-heads, being more close to Common Gull in size. The wings were long and as dark smoky grey as a Lesser Black-back, with broad black wingtips. The bill was heavy and dark blood-red, with a pale tip. As quickly as it had appeared, it floated away over the rooftops. Three late Fieldfares flying east, then ten minutes later, west, seemed to be the last gasp of winter.
